He is working a different method from what you did earlier so you do like this (addition, subtraction like grade school
2x-3y=1
-2x-8y=-12
becomes 11y=-11. Solve for y. There are a lot of ways to solve simultaneous equations

no, jprahman made a mistake there, I think he meant , when you substitute y in the first equation you get x+4 =6, x= 2
