5 equal squares are placed side by side to form rectangle ABCD. If the perimeter of the rectangle is 360 centimeters, what is the area of one of the squares

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Draw it out it should look easy once you draw it out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did but getting nowhere

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tried to work backword

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The square are equal. So the sides are equal. Once you put them side by side you can see the number of square sides that are on the perimeter of the rectangle. Davide the number of sides in the parameter by 360 and you should get the length of one side of a square. once you know the side length just square it to get the area of one square

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if x is the side of each square, what is the perimeter of the rectangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

perimeter is AB+BC+CD+DA right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, it x is the side of each square, what is the length of AD?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and what is the length of AB?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what is the perimeter of the rectangle in terms of x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8x=360

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you get 8x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=45

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry 12x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so x is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=30

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if x is 30, what is the area of each square?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

area is 900

OpenStudy (anonymous):

900 what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

square cm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there you go! you got your answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for your help. appreciate it.
