we know y=y, so we can set them equal to each other:
8x-4=-4
then you have to get all your variables (your xs) to one side and all your constants (the plain old numbers) to the other side. so to do that you have to cancel out the -4 on the left. to do that you have to ADD 4 to the left (because -4 + 4 =0). when you do something to one side, you have to do the same thing to the other side. so we added 4 to the left side, so we have to add 4 to the right side:
8x-4+4=-4+4
8x=0
then you have to get your x all by itself. the x is being multiplied by 8, so you have to do the opposite of multiplying, you have to divide it by 8. since we are dividing the left side by 8 what do we do to the right side? divide that by 8 too. but 0/8 is still 0, so we get:
8x/8=0/8
x=0
