OpenStudy (amistre64):
which polynomial are we looking at?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
\[1. 2-11x^2-8x+6x^2\]
OpenStudy (anonymous):
thats a 2 NOT a 1.2 srry
myininaya (myininaya):
degree is 2
OpenStudy (amistre64):
we combine all the like terms together, do you know how to do that?

for the most part
OpenStudy (anonymous):
lemme try and u tell me if i got it
OpenStudy (amistre64):
ok :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
16x^4+8x+2?
myininaya (myininaya):
x^4?

OpenStudy (amistre64):
close...close....
myininaya (myininaya):
positive 8?
OpenStudy (amistre64):
6x^2 -11x^2 -8x +2
OpenStudy (amistre64):
-5x^2 -8x +2 would be the gooder form :)
OpenStudy (amistre64):
how many terms do we see? a term is everything between a + or a - sign...

i hate matthe
OpenStudy (anonymous):
4?
OpenStudy (amistre64):
im probably not being clear enough, but that was a good guess :)
OpenStudy (amistre64):
-5x^2 <- 1 term
-8x <- 1 term
+2 <- 1 term
how many terms are there?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
3

oh you ment in the simplified 1.. ohhh 0-0
OpenStudy (amistre64):
3 is the number of wheels on a tricycle... this is a trinomial
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes.. the part that gets me is the math and
OpenStudy (anonymous):
if its a quad or cubic
OpenStudy (amistre64):
what is the highest number exponent you see in the our trinomial?

OpenStudy (anonymous):
2
OpenStudy (amistre64):
then the degree is 2 :) thats all there is to that...
and quadratic is just a fancy latin name for "we squared it" which means it has a 2 degree.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so cubed would be?
OpenStudy (amistre64):
a cube is 3 diminsional... so a degree of 3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
power of 2 is squared. cubed is power of 3.

ok thanks thats simple enough 0-0
OpenStudy (anonymous):
And when they want the degree you just find the term with the largest exponent. The exponent is the degree of the polynomial.
OpenStudy (amistre64):
try this one:
4x^5 +5x -2 how many terms are there?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
3
OpenStudy (amistre64):
very good :) and 3 is a tri...??

YEASH )-)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
So what kind of polynomial is it?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
trinomial
OpenStudy (amistre64):
yay!!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
with degree of?

OpenStudy (amistre64):
and its degree is?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
5
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yep.
OpenStudy (amistre64):
hoorah!!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
can you two be mah math teacher???

Try this one on for size.
3(x+2) + x^2(x-4) + 5x
OpenStudy (amistre64):
lol.... :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
NOOOO. it looks like it has been distributed?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
It needs some distribution and some combining of terms yes.
OpenStudy (amistre64):
way to burst a bubble lol ;)

IKR. i dont need that now
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Well he wanted me to be his math teacher.. that's what he gets! ;p
OpenStudy (amistre64):
LOL!!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
It's very easy to distribute. You'll be surprised at how fast it is. Give it a try.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I'll do the first distribution for you.
3(x+2) = 3x+6

noo. that is unnesesary (fail spelling) work for me :(
OpenStudy (anonymous):
No, it's good practice.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
If you practice you can do it easily.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
good practice is the worksheet i need to do
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok, then do your other homework, then come back and do it ;p

Of course.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Find the degree of the monomial.
6x^8y^5
OpenStudy (anonymous):
it would be 8
OpenStudy (anonymous):
right.

13
OpenStudy (anonymous):
if a term has more than one variable you have to add the exponents.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
go away myininaya. you not mah teacher. :P
OpenStudy (anonymous):
oohk
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so 13

Write the polynomial in standard form
4g-g^3+3g^2-2
OpenStudy (anonymous):
just combine terms?
Join the QuestionCove community and study together with friends!

OpenStudy (anonymous):
There are no terms there you can combine. They all have different degrees
OpenStudy (anonymous):
So you just have to put them in order from highest degree to lowest.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Each term has a degree, and the degree of the polynomial is the highest degree of all of the terms
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Standard form means that all like terms are combined, and the terms are in order of degree from highest to lowest.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
lemme try it

-g^3+3g^2+4g+-2?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
??
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yes except +-2 is just -2
OpenStudy (anonymous):
alrighty then
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Match the expression with its name.
6x^3-9x+3
