last thing A restaurant manager bought 20 packages of bagels. Some packages contained 6 bagels each, and the rest contained 12 bagels each. There were 168 bagels in all. How many packages of 12 bagels did the manager buy?
The total number of bagles = 12*(the number of 12 bagel bags) + 6*(the number of 6 bagel bags)
8
20 = (the number of 12 bagel bags) + (the number of 6 bagel bags)
2 equations, 2 unknowns. Go.
divide the total by 12 and get 14 bags of 12. this is shoert of the 20 you need. then just understand for every i bag of twelve you take away you add to bags of six. this leads you to knocking the 14 bags of twelve to 8 bags of 12 and giving you 8 bags or 6. This gives you your 20 bags and your 168 bagels
this is the guess and check method, polpaks's is mathematical sound though and is a better answer
