the "middle" 2 values are 75 and 85. The mean of those two is 80 - So the median of those 4 values is 80.

The median of a finite list of numbers can be found by arranging all the observations from lowest value to highest value and picking the middle one. If there is an even number of observations, then there is no single middle value; the median is then usually defined to be the mean of the two middle values.

@mary1000: as mitch already mentioned - you can't just pick the middle number, as it appears - you have to order them first. From "smallest" to "biggest"...

So in this example the >middle< two numbers aren't 75 an 89 - they are 75 and 85..
