|x - 1| >= 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x-1>= 2 or -(x-1)>=2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x>=3 or -x+1>=2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x>=3 or x<= -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks ankur504 i got the same ans as you, but i'm confused because in the solutions it says (-infinity , -1] U [3 , +infinity) ???????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Same thing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lokisan where does - infinity and all that come from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ankur said x<=-1, so that means ALL x less than or equal to -1...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x>=3 means real numbers greater than 3 to infinity

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Check out a number line...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The points -1 and 3 will partition it into three intervals: \[(-\infty,-1]\]\[(-1,3)\]\[[3,\infty)\]The set of all x that satisfy your inequality is then\[(-\infty, 1] \cup [3,\infty)\]

oh i understand now, thanks a bunch!

np :)
