Well you typically don't square things when you find the area of a rectangle, triangle, or trapezoid. Those are b*h, 1/2*b*h, and 1/2*h*(b1 + b2) respectively... the only basic ones I'm familiar with that you square for are squares and circles. The reason we square to find areas of squares is simple: We're taking the length of one side and replicating that length across the same length in another dimension. A circle, you are essentially finding the number of "squares" inside it. I guess I'm not quite sure what you're looking for with this question...

it is becuase you're multipling two things:base and height & lenght and width
Volume is the product of three lengths (L × width × ht) = Volume³
