why is area squared?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You mean why do we use square units like square inches, square feet, square meters, etc. to describe area?

OpenStudy (ny,ny):

umm like when u find the area of a shape, u always square it

OpenStudy (ny,ny):

...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well you typically don't square things when you find the area of a rectangle, triangle, or trapezoid. Those are b*h, 1/2*b*h, and 1/2*h*(b1 + b2) respectively... the only basic ones I'm familiar with that you square for are squares and circles. The reason we square to find areas of squares is simple: We're taking the length of one side and replicating that length across the same length in another dimension. A circle, you are essentially finding the number of "squares" inside it. I guess I'm not quite sure what you're looking for with this question...

OpenStudy (ny,ny):

dont worry, you got it but wait i dont get it

OpenStudy (ny,ny):

oh! i just got the answer from the internet! thx for ur support though it is becuase you're multipling two things:base and height & lenght and width Volume is the product of three lengths (L × width × ht) = Volume³

OpenStudy (ny,ny):

i mean OR lenght and width

OpenStudy (ny,ny):

not &

OpenStudy (ny,ny):

bye!
