A chef wants to open a new Italian restaurant. He wants to find out which kinds of pasta (spaghetti, linguini, or penne) will be the most popular with potential customers. He hires a polling organization to survey the market. The organization surveys the 123rd person on each page of the telephone book. This is an example of which of the following sampling techniques?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. Simple random sample (SRS) B. Stratified sample C. Cluster sample D. Systematic sample E. Convenience sample

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'd go with stratified http://stattrek.com/Lesson6/STR.aspx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's systematic. It isn't stratified because there are no clearly identified strata (like demographic groups or something).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Systematic would be every 123 person. But its on each page. I'm guessing the strata are the pages and a sample is taken from each one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i would say systematic, as its on each page, its the123rd person on each page its one person a page, not each page as a subgroup

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But systematic is every nth person. You can't be sure that you are doing that if you do 123rd per page. Maybe 123rd straight without considering pages is systematic. In this case the population (telephone book) is divided into groups from which one sample is taken.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, you're right. When I read it, I assumed that they were just taking every 123rd person. My bad...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought the same thing at first

its hard to tell at times
