Indicate whether the following statements are True (T) or False (F). 1. Sqrt of 49 is a rational number 2. Pi is a real number 3. 0 is a natural number 4. -17 is an integer 5. 3/2 is an integer 6. Sqrt of 3 is a rational number 7. 2 is a real number If you can help that would be great!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first off do you know what real and natural numbers are?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no what is the difference

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Natural is the way little kids naturally count 1,2,3,4,5,6 ...

myininaya (myininaya):

(1) is true sqrt(49)=7 is a ration number (2) pi is a real number. if it were pi*sqrt(-1) then is would be not real (3) natural numbers are counting numbers when you count you start with 1 not 0 so 0 is not a natural number (4) -17 is an integer just like 0 and 4 are (5) 3/2 is a rational since it is an integer/integer so 3/2 is not an integer (6) sqrt(3) is irrational because it goes on forever (7) 2 is a real number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0 is a natural number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

natural numbers denote non negative integers

myininaya (myininaya):

no it is a whole number

myininaya (myininaya):

not a natural number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The term "natural number" refers either to a member of the set of positive integers 1, 2, 3, ... (Sloane's A000027) or to the set of nonnegative integers 0, 1, 2, 3, ... (Sloane's A001477; e.g., Bourbaki 1968, Halmos 1974). Regrettably, there seems to be no general agreement about whether to include 0 in the set of natural numbers. In fact, Ribenboim (1996) states "Let be a set of natural numbers; whenever convenient, it may be assumed that ."

myininaya (myininaya):

I learned that the natural numbers was also the counting set you do not start counting with 0 you start counting with 1 so 0 is not a natural

myininaya (myininaya):

nerd warS!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok thanks guys, that makes sense!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think for all practical purposes it doesn matter at all, any applications in advanced mathematics this becomes obselete anyway

myininaya (myininaya):

not linear algebra

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cmon, lets be rational :D

myininaya (myininaya):

sets are talked about in advanced math like linear algebra and discrete math

myininaya (myininaya):

no lets be irrational

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i took both courses and you dont care about it lol

myininaya (myininaya):

we did care about it lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes for engineering its dramatically important to know if 0 is a natural number

myininaya (myininaya):

lol

myininaya (myininaya):

i think you are in the imaginary set

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i doubt you took a course on this beyond high school

myininaya (myininaya):

come on talk to me in a mathy way or nerdy way thats not a fun insult

myininaya (myininaya):

you could had least said your mom goes to college

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cmon this is getting divergent. We need to integrate more. There should be a limit so stop it

myininaya (myininaya):

lol

myininaya (myininaya):

i like xavier

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think you guys just look up math facts on wikipedia.......without actual background

myininaya (myininaya):

your line is tangent to the curve of bullpellet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sigh...

myininaya (myininaya):

please don't get offended. I was just thinking of something cool to say

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no im not offended i just think that if you wanna go out in the real world correcting people like you do on this site ppl with the background, like me, will laugh at you because there is so much more to math then these "mathy" "nerdy" lines you are whipping out lool

myininaya (myininaya):

listen i do have a mathematical background and not one of my instructors ever said 0 was in the set of the naturals

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok does anyone care if it is or not?

myininaya (myininaya):

and you are the one who was trying to correct me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i just give you an outside opinion

myininaya (myininaya):

an i was giving my opinion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my point was that it practically doesnt matter at all, and you went on to say not if you take linear algebra

myininaya (myininaya):

avalanche is was jk with you about the nerd wars I thought u were too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok lol lets just calm down cuz i think this really doesn matter anyway lol

myininaya (myininaya):

no i was saying they discuss sets in linear algebra

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes they discuss sets, for about 2 minutes

myininaya (myininaya):

ok i wasn't saying your math was crap

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok ok ok lets calm downn lol

myininaya (myininaya):

i was just looking for a friendly war :( and you hate me thats not fair

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg haha i dont hate you at all

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how could you hate over text chat

OpenStudy (anonymous):

some kind of math terrorist

myininaya (myininaya):

u hate my text chat

OpenStudy (anonymous):

? lmao

OpenStudy (anonymous):

conclusion to anyone who reads this noone gives a sh*t if 0 is included in the natural numbers or not, if you are anything except mathematician you will most likely be able to live without arguing about it. and we are all friends

myininaya (myininaya):

lol i have a masters in math and I'm fixing to get into a phd program for applied scinece

myininaya (myininaya):

science*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

..no wonder you care, see im in engineering and im more concerned with more practical things vs theory

myininaya (myininaya):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well my instructors drill it into my brain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not to say what ur doing isnt good

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i could never do a masters in math thats awesome

myininaya (myininaya):

it was stressful as i'm sure any degree would be

myininaya (myininaya):

engineering is cool too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i had to take 3 calculus, stats, differential equations, linear algebra

myininaya (myininaya):

i wish i didn't something with "appliedness"

myininaya (myininaya):

did*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well depends on what you like

myininaya (myininaya):

i'm going to get into a little cryptography. i cant wait

OpenStudy (anonymous):

some stuff in engineering is far from being apploed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that almost sounds like computer science course of some sort

myininaya (myininaya):

yes. it is applied number theory and maybe some other small topics in math and topics in computer science of course

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i was in cs my first semester of university and decided that i couldn take 15 hour assignments in front of the computer anymore

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but yes some topics are really interesting and might take some electives

myininaya (myininaya):

i just want to look at the theory and develop my own cryptosystem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea see i admire people who can learn that cuz some topics in math i look at them and unless i can think of something practically related to it i get bored, like some techniques to solve differentail equations were a bit abstract as well as 1 or 2 things in calculus

myininaya (myininaya):

it was nice talking to you. I will be your fan. I have to go to sleep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Gnight

myininaya (myininaya):

oh i was already a fan nvm
