Hi, I totally forgot how to do line and slope, can someone help me out???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you want to be helped? do you have example problems?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, the first point on the graph is 1,2, the second is 0,-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay do you know how to find the slope of the line given two points?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, that's why I'm here

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mmk, i'm just asking

OpenStudy (anonymous):

formula for slope is change in y over change in x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so slope would be (-2 -2) / (0 - 1) which comes out to be 4 so the slope is four

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, I get it now, I was looking online, but everything was too comlicated, thanks for the help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now we have the formula for a line y = mx + b where m is the slope and b is the intercept put slope in y = 4x + b we are also given two points, since both points are on the line, you can pick either say we pick the first one, plug it in for x and y 2 = 4(1) + b b = -2 line is y = 4x - 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that works, okay, that totally helps with homework, I'm glad i found this site

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cheers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for the help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright, i have another question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hello????????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

go ahead

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if the equation is (3,-2), (0,-3) then u would switch it around to (0,-2), (3,-3)????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

??????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just because we are live, doesn't mean we are going to respond instantly you can't switch them because you would be changing the points

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then wat? I don't get it then.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then you find the slope, like we did in the first question change in y over change in x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i still don't understand, i'm only in 7th grade

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the question is find a line between (3,-2), (0,-3) so find the slope change in y over change in x (-3 - -2)/ (0 - 3) slope is 1/3 understand this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait, so its kinda like subtracting

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes slope formula is \[\frac{x1 - x2}{y1 - y2}\] is this more clear?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i totaly get it now, OH, we did this last year in school, thanks!!!! (:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol no problem good luck

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks
