At most racetracks consists a selection of 1st 2nd or 3rd finishers in a proper order. If they are 10 entries in the race, how many tickets must you purchase to win?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

NO MORE CHEATING

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I didn't cheat I been getting them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

define winning, getting first place only ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk

Please provide some help on my question after you are done with this one. My question is posted at http://openstudy.com/groups/mathematics#/updates/4db9038eb0ab8b0ba0277b8b

To win the Trifecta, you must pick the three horses finishing first, second and third in exact order

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://www.santaanita.com/content/how-wager

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you want to pick 3 horses out of 10 , where order counts

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the order will determine the first, second and third in the race

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we know that the number of ways to choose 3 things out of ten where order counts is 10 P 3 , where P is permutations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 30?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0r 3.333333

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you get 30?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

by times it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10 P 3 is 10 *9 * 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

another way to look at this, there are 10 ways for a first , then once you pick a first winner, there are 9 horses left for a second place, then once you pick a second place there are 8 horses left for a third place

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 10 * 9 * 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

720

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you would have to buy A LOT of tickets to win, i wonder if this is feasible to make money

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats the difference with c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

c?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like my new one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be the same as mustiplying

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like 12C2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you have a new one?
