A utility company in a western city of the United States expects the consumption of electricity to increase by 11%/year during the next decade, due mainly to the expected increase in population. If consumption does increase at this rate, find the amount by which the utility company will have to increase its generating capacity in order to meet the needs of the area at the end of the decade.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.11^9 if you consider 9 years left until the end of this decade.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would you put the answer into percent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to convert a number into a percent, all you have to do is multiply it by 100 ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did what the other person did and still got the wrong answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm, I'll try one sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm, let's count, when will this decade end?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in 9 years?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh I think I got it now :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if the consumption increases 11% ------> every 1 year then how much will it increase (x)-------> in 9 years? are you aware of this way? we have the following now: 11%---------> 1 year x (%) --------> 9 years cross multiply and you'll get : x(%) = (11)% (9) x = 99% I guess, I'm not sure though :) correct me please if I'm wrong ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

still not right. dont worry about it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does a decade end in 9 years?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well a decade is 10 years

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then it must me 110% instead of multiplying by 9 that is :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

np ^_^, is it correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no but I know what to do now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you do it
