OpenStudy (anonymous):

if there is a circle and 1/3 of it is shaded and then another 1/4 of it was also shaded. how much of the circle is not shaded?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

58.33%?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh wait not shaded..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does it need to be a fraction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and its a fraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes but i figured it out. wil u help me with this one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can try, sure.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if 4/7 of a circle is shaded and another 1/3 of it is also shaded..how much of it is not shaded?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10/21? LOL I have no idea. :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2/21....(4/7)=(12/21) & (1/3)=(7/21)....so, (12/21)+(7/21)=(19/21). 1=(21/21). Therefore, (21/21)-(19/21)=(2/21)....(2/21) is the fraction of the circle that is not shaded, so that's your answer.

linalg will u help me with this one too? There are 96new houses being built in a neighborhood. Last month, 1/3 of them were sold. This month, 3/8 of the remaining houses were sold. How many houses are left to be sold?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

40

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ur right!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A bookstore had 72 copies of a magazine. Yesterday, it sold 1/4 of them. Today, it sold 1/6 of what remained. How many copies does the bookstore have left?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First you have to figure out what fraction of 96 were sold the last month..so, 96 (1/3) = 32. This means that after the first month there are 96-32=64 houses remaining. Then 3/8 of those houses were sold. So, 64(3/8)= 24 house. So, 24 houses were sold during the second month. Simply subtract that from 64 which is how many houses remained after the first month and you get 64-24= 40 houses.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You should be able to start catching on and doing them yourself. Try to figure out how I did the last one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i can't do it .. im lost

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You just have to think about the problem in segments. It always seems to give you a number to start with. For example 72 magazines in the last problem you gave me. And then you have to use the fractions (1/4) to figure out how many magazines were sold yesterday. Figure that out real quick. Message me how many books were sold after yesterday.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i think i got it ..h/o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What answer did you get for the magazine problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

45???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes! Good job! haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahah thanks :))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

keep an eye out for me bc i will be needing ur help again here in a minute lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ann had 45 fliers to post around town. Last week, she posted 2/3 of them. This week, she posted 4/5 of the remaining fliers. How many fliers has she still not posted?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 6 3/4 but it said that was wrong.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ya, that's wrong. Show me what you did to figure it out
