brackets are generalized parenthesis. for example, () are called parenthesis. () are also called brackets. [] are called square brackets. {} are called curly brackets.

Use wikipedia always before posting your questions here. I am doing the same thing you would have done had you searched for brackets. Brackets have a lot of different uses in a lot of different fields of math.

you cycle thru the brackets to keep things "in order" :) you tend to use (), then [], then {}, then (), then [], then {} or some such menagerie
