How to solve a graphing lines in standard form with this problem: x + 2y = 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please Help me!? :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

set x = any number you want and find out what y is for that value of x. set x = any other number and find out what y is for that value of x. now you have two sets of x and ys. those represent two points (x1 y1) and (x2 y2) draw a line through those two points. that line is the graph of your equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

put x=0 in the equation find out y. then put y=0 and find out x. plot the two (x,y) values in the graph and draw a straight line joining thesr two points..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks, but i cant understand it yet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay choose any number and tell me what number you chose.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe hmmm, I think 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@adi: dont you think taking any of the variables as zero would simplify things better?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@deep yes, but that is not the point of how to plot a graph and what it means to plot a graph.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know, cause i dont have any idea...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so you chose 3. set x =3 in your equation x+2y = 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what value of y did you get for x = 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okey, so what's next?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the point to graphing is just finding two points on the graph of a linear equation and joining them. i dont know what "point" you are referring to. no offense buddy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its okey at least you answer my question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the point of graphing is to find a visual representation of an equation. it doesn't matter which points you choose.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are wrong, teen girl, it is 1.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now, choose another number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okey 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and the answer is also 2 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right, so your two points are (3,1.5) and (2,2) so now, on a piece of graph paper, draw a line through those two points. that is your answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are welcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can understand it now.. :) Thanks again!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good, note that you could have chosen any number for x and you would have got a corresponding value for y.
