help me multiply and divide rational expreaaions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is the equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[24/7^{2} \times 14^{6}/ 40\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. Do you understand the "power rules" such as 7^2 = 49?

OpenStudy (yuki):

usually it makes it easier to break down the numbers into its prime factors for example, 24 = \[2^3 * 3\] then you divide out whatever is on the numerator and denominator

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i understand power rules . but do you cross mutiply

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No. You horizontally multiply. Cross multiplication is for terms on either side of the = sign.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok got it lol

OpenStudy (yuki):

for future reference, kitkat, what you wanted to say is probably cross "division" you meant to cancel the terms on the top and the ones on the bottom right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whattt ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What Yuki was implying... Examine 7^2 and 14^6. How can the 14^6 eliminate 7^2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yall are confusing me know .. so i 7\[\times\] 7 = 49 then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

14^6 can be rewritten as 7*2(14^5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That will cancel out 7^2 and make it just 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what im really bad at math

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let me explain :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha ok (:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(24/7^2) * 14^6/40 = (24/7) / 2(14^5)/40 We've taken a step to reduce the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry, i meant (24/7) * 2(14^5)/40

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im confused :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

24/7 can be rewritten as 6*4/7 and 2(14^5)/40 can be rewritten as 2(14^5)/(4*10) The 4's will cancel and you'll have 6/7 * 2(14^5)/10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okayy i think i get it so the answer should be 6\[^{4}\]/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no the answer will be 92198.4 6 * 2(14^5) = 6453888 7*10=70 3226944/0 6453888/70 = 92198.4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mmmmm ... idk about that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol, it works out. it's tough explaining it on the computer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol it really is but on my answer sheet it says

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A\[6^{4}/5\]. b \[6^{3}/5\] .c.\[336^{6}/280^{2}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or d.\[42^{4}/35\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

vry odd. I just put it in my TI 89 calc and got my same answer. Bad answer sheet? I'm 99.9% sure I did the math correctly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well its for school lol . so..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Double check with your teacher. I'm very confident I gave you the right solution.
