125x^4 y^-5 (------------) ^2 5x^6 y^-5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You need to take the (126x^4y^-5)^2 first.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry 125

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first line is y^-3 sorry...not -5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is the problem (125x^4y-3)^2 ------------ 5x^6y^-5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK.. order of operations says to ^2 first so (125x^4y^-3)^2 is 125*125 = 15625 x^8y^-6 (multiply exponents when you take a power to a power)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

15625x^8y^-6 ------------- 5x^6y^-5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok I follow

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3125x^2y^-1 you divide 15626/5 = 3125 you subtract exponents x^(8-6) x^2 and y^(-6 - -5) y^-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can't have a negative exponent so you put the y term on the bottom to the positive power 3125x^2 -------- y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k, so this is the answer? Thanks for your help!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u help me with one more....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y^-6 Z^0 -------- y^-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y^-6 z^0 -------- y^-3 first of all anything to the 0 power is equal to 1 y^-6 (1) ---- y^-3 y^-6 ---- y^-3 you subtract exponents ... be careful... it is top minus bottom. so y^(-6 - -3) so y^(-6 + 3) so y^-3 but because we can't have a negative exponent. it is 1 -- y^3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Great!! I get it. Thanks a million!

No problem.
