Divide: (2x^5+4x^3-5x^2+3x-2) divison sign (x^2+2x-3)
Do you know how to long divide?
No.
Is that what you are studying? I don't want to show you if that is not what you are doing.
Yeah it is.. but I am having trouble with it.
OK... first of all look at the first polynomial... look at their exponents. you see. x^5 then x^3 then x^2 then x then -2 Do you see that x^4 is missing?
Yes.
You put in zero for it.
OK we will have to put in 0 of those because that is how this works. Also... in the x^2 + 2x - 3 nothing is missing because we have x^2 and 2x OK.. here we go.
------------------------------------- x^2 + 2x - 3 | 2x^5 + 0x^4 + 4x^3 - 5x^2 + 3x - 2 what do we need to multiply x^2 by to get 2x^5?
2x^3
Wait no.
2x^4
Good... 2x^3 ------------------------------------- x^2 + 2x - 3 | 2x^5 + 0x^4 + 4x^3 - 5x^2 + 3x - 2 as soon as you enter a number up top you multiply it by everything on the left .. you distribute
Oh I was right. hAHA
2x^3 ------------------------------------- x^2 + 2x - 3 | 2x^5 + 0x^4 + 4x^3 - 5x^2 + 3x - 2 2x^5 + 4x^4 - 6x^3 ------------------- OK?
Yes...
Once you multiply... (distribute) you draw a line and then change the signs of every term on the bottom and then add the terms and then bring down the next term. 2x^3 ------------------------------------- x^2 + 2x - 3 | 2x^5 + 0x^4 + 4x^3 - 5x^2 + 3x - 2 - 2x^5 - 4x^4 + 6x^3 ------------------- -4x^4 + 10x^3 - 5x^2 OK? and then we do the process again (notice that I changed every term on the polynomial before I added.)
2x^3 ------------------------------------- x^2 + 2x - 3 | 2x^5 + 0x^4 + 4x^3 - 5x^2 + 3x - 2 - 2x^5 - 4x^4 + 6x^3 ------------------- -4x^4 + 10x^3 - 5x^2 What do you need to multiply x^2 by to get -4x^4?
umm 2x^2?
2x^3 - 2x^2 ------------------------------------- x^2 + 2x - 3 | 2x^5 + 0x^4 + 4x^3 - 5x^2 + 3x - 2 - 2x^5 - 4x^4 + 6x^3 ------------------- -4x^4 + 10x^3 - 5x^2 -4x^4 - 4x^3 + 6x^2 -------------------- No.. -2x^2 you need the - sign. So I multiplied, drew the line, now change every sign on the bottom, add and bring down the next term.
6x^3-1x^2
2x^3 - 2x^2 + 14x - 29 R. 103x - 89 ------------------------------------- x^2 + 2x - 3 | 2x^5 + 0x^4 + 4x^3 - 5x^2 + 3x - 2 - 2x^5 - 4x^4 + 6x^3 ------------------- -4x^4 + 10x^3 - 5x^2 +4x^4 + 4x^3 - 6x^2 -------------------- 14x^3 - x^2 + 3x -14x^3 - 28x^2 + 42x ------------------ -29x^2 + 45x - 2 +29x^2 + 58x - 87 ------------------ 103x - 89 Now x^2 times what is 14x^3 answer + 14x I put that on top, multiplied, drew the line, changed the signs, added, brought down the next term. Now x^2 times what is -29x^2 answer -29 I put that on top, multiplied, drew the line, changed the signs, added, brought down the next term Then what is leftover is the remainder. Do you understand?
In our last post... you forgot to change the signs before you added.
Sorry.. in YOUR last post.
Hmm I guess.
Do you want me to go back and start from my post before the answer and go slowly?
