Mathematics 20 Online
OpenStudy (mathmagician):

What mathematics lesson would be the best for you? (I will try to teach 9th graders about pyramids tomorrow)?

myininaya (myininaya):

pascal's triangle! teach that!

OpenStudy (mathmagician):

thanks for idea :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or Sierpinski's triangle! :D Both are quite fun to learn.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

Gabriels horn ;)

myininaya (myininaya):

Never heard of Sierpinski I will have to look him up

OpenStudy (mathmagician):

you will like it :)

myininaya (myininaya):

:)

myininaya (myininaya):

is this like a geometry class?

OpenStudy (mathmagician):

yes

myininaya (myininaya):

i wonder why geometry is not a required course in college

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For most physical science and math majors, I think it is...

myininaya (myininaya):

i got masters in math, but i was not required to take college geometry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wow. ˚¬˚ interesting. Maybe your discipline wasn't directly related to geometry?

myininaya (myininaya):

it was elective type course for all math majors at my university

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know of a lot of people with degrees in math who end up working in finance and analysis; few actually apply geometry that I know of. :P

myininaya (myininaya):

but geometry is interesting and i think should had been required

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Definitely. It really solidifies many peoples' understanding of math; maybe we'd have more math majors if more people took geometry and visually stimulating mathematics!

OpenStudy (yuki):

exactly

OpenStudy (yuki):

if we did geometry more, trigonometry and calculus will make much more sense because usually we use the unit circle and similarities

OpenStudy (yuki):

especially in differentiating and integrating volumes and areas and arclength and stuff

OpenStudy (mathmagician):

mathematics seems not so interesting, when you dont try to visualize it

OpenStudy (yuki):

I was always wondering why when you differentiate the volume of a sphere looks like the surface area

OpenStudy (yuki):

and I just found out that it was not a coincidence when I took geometry in college
