Need help with dividing polynomials

OpenStudy (yuki):

what's the rational eqn?

OpenStudy (yuki):

helooo?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4xsquared+x-3/x+1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that yields \[(x+1)(4x-3)/(x+1)\] Which you can see gives you 4x-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you. My son is having trouble understanding how to process the top of the problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have to factor the polynomial in the numerator \[4x ^{2}+x-3\] the denominator is a hint that one of the factors of the polynomial is x+1 you know that something times x+1 is \[4x ^{2}+x-3\] so by trial and error with FOIL you can see that the other factor is 4x-3
