Name two processes that happen during meiosis which result in genetic recombination so that the 4 daughter cells have different DNA from each other and from the parent cell.

crossing over

1. The "crossing over": during late prophase I of meiosis, there forms a tetrad(4 chromosomes). Sometimes they come together so strongly that the chromosomes become entangled or twisted. As they pull apart sections can break apart, rearrange and then reattach(crossing over). A new pattern in the DNA is created. This creates new variations in inheritance. Sections of DNA can even be lost. 2. During metaphase I, when the tetrads are lining up into two rows, there is no set way for them to line up. This means even more variation can happen as they mix even more. This is the same for metaphase II. There is nothing to tell the chromosomes which way to face, so the DNA gets mixed around even more.

#2 Is referred to as "random assortment"
