Decomposers (fungi) secrete digestive enzymes that breakdown dead and waste materials into simple, inorganic materials, which are subsequently absorbed by them.

They are known as saprophytic organisms. What makes them good at decomposition is their ability to send out the hyphae (thin filaments that elongate via mitosis) to where the food is located. From there, they secrete their digestive enzymes to get the essential nutrients they require. 

One advantage is there is no limit to the size of the food which can be consumed.
