simplify 10/5-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10/5 = 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then 2-1=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK, what's confusing you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry thequestion ws 10/5-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, you mean 10/(5-1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I m not sure how to tpe it butit is 10 divided by 5 subtract 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The 5 and the 1 are both in the denominator right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it is written like 10 / 5-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no denominator it is not a fraction the question isaing me to simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm still not sure I understand how the problem is written but it seems to me that you need to start by subtracting the 1 from the 5: 5-1=4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then you get 10/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what Iwould like to know is do I divide or subtract first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In this case, you can't divide until you subtract

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If I've interpreted the problem correctly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okthank

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You set for now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or do you have more questions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{10}{5 -1}= \frac{10}{4} = \frac{5}{2} = 2.5\]
