y=-x^2+5x+6 vertex?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Vertex means the lowest point?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or the highest pt

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the minimum or maximum point.. maximum in this case

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it will be (-b/2a, -D/4a)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or you can just apply d/dx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2x + 5 = 0 x = 5/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can we differentiate it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the problem is im getting 49/4 when x=5/2 and my book says the answer is 29/4... no differentiation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it will be (-b/2a, -D/4a).how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm...-(5/2)^2 + 25/2 + 6 = -25/4+25/2+6 = 25/4 + 6 =49/4, you're right!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

y=-(5/2)^2+5(5/2)+6 y = -25/4 + 25/2 +6......... yup

OpenStudy (anonymous):

See: do you know differentiation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya very well.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. so when you differentiate ax^2+bx+c and equate it to 0, you get -b/2a Putting this in fn: you get -D/4a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-D/4a?how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

See: did u get y i differentiated?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plz tell me the reasion?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok when we differentiate, we get the eqn of the slopes of that eqn on respective pts

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why we want to know slope?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tell me what you know about derivative at a pt?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have done intermediate level

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. its the limiting secant to the graph, the tangent!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bec of tangent we differentiate ya?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not actually, derivative is also the rate, you can say, See the more slope a pt has, wouldn't it turn more? What I mean is if it has more slope it will increase faster!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks amogh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you understand why we equate the slope to 0?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually iam not intouch.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm...np was i clear enough?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks alot amogh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

LOL, I'm askin you did u understood wat i said now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or i was too fast or slow?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u was splended amogh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Determine the vertex of the given equation. y = x2 + 9? im Haveing trouble.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^2
