How do I find the greatest common factor for (3x, 6) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 if x is odd, 6 if x is even

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You need to find the biggest number that will divide into both. 3x is divisible by 3 & x 6 is divisible by 2&3 Then the maximum factor is 3 (or your GCF is 3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is 3 if x is odd, but if x is even it can be written as 2n for some integer n. 3*2n=6n, so 6 is the GCF. Depends on the parity of x.

x is a placeholder :D We treat it as such, not as a number :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, then it is 3 if x is just an object :)
