a man has four socks in his drawer . each socket is either black or white . the changes of him selecting a pair at random and finding that he has a white pair is 0.5. what one his chances of the pair being black?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

option are ;a.0 b.0.5 c.2/3 d.none.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answer is none. he has 4 socks in the drawer. the number of ways to pick two out of 4 is \[\dbinom{4}{2}=6\] and this is your denominator. you numerator therefore must be 3 which is \[\dbinom{3}{1}\] so he hasd 3 white socks to pick from

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if this is abstract, draw 4 circles, 3 open and once shaded in. then see what all the combinations are and you will see that half of them have two white socks and half have one white and one black.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops 0 is the answer. the probability is 0, not 'none'

great job,
