I don't think this is a biological question....try physics....by the way they work on the basis of smth called magnetic field...(i haven't paid much attention to physics....) :)

well @sammy... any magnet comprises numerous tiny molecules which themselves are magnets of atomic dimensions. When they are arranged in linear fashion they collectively work as a complete magnet. The force or the field arises due to some mis-arrangments the unpaired 3d electrons ( which have magnetic moments ). YOU KNOW CLASSICAL MECHANICS IS NOT CAPABLE OF GIVING ANY SATISFACTORY DESCRIPTION OF MAGNETISM. You can take the help of quantum theory if you get to know what is magnetic field made of... Precisely speaking, I am 16 yrs old and that stuff is out of my grip.
