Different techniques depending on what you are working on. Give an example of a problem.
the long cut is to graph it; the short cut is to use the degree of the top and bottom of the rational expression to determine the HAs
if bottom is greater than top; HA = 0 if bottom and top are = ; then leading coeffs if bottom less than top; no HA, but a slant/oblique asymp appears
for example -6x^2+4x+9/-7x^2+9x+9
x^2 = x^2; strip all but the first numbers; HA = -6/-7 = 6/7

the long cut is to divide all by the degree of the bottom; and see what you get left over; if anything is left with an 'x' in the bottom of it, it = 0
