Why were the earlier settlers in Jamestown not considered the founding fathers?

Jamestown was settled in 1607 over 150 years before the troubles that led to the founding of the United States. By then is was a little backwater town of not much significance having been put on a swampy island. The people that founded Jamestown had next to nothing to do with the founding of the country.
