About Venn Diagrams and set notation. Does a "minus P" mean minus the overlap or all of "P"? Example Triple Venn of K, P and M. K has 15 people, 6 of which overlap with P. P has 7 people, 6 of which over lap with K. If M union K = 12, would MUK - P = 6 or 5?

Hoot! You just asked your first question! Hang tight while I find people to answer it for you. You can thank people who give you good answers by clicking the 'Good Answer' button on the right!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't see a good answer button.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[M \bigcup K \setminus P\] would be the set of everything that is in M and K but not in P.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We can't know how many from P are in M union K without knowing more about M.

I'll try to attach file

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (amistre64):

-P tends to mean (notP)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it would be minus 7 in this Venn, not minus 6?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

notP = {1,3,8}

OpenStudy (amistre64):

subtract P from the union of MK right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Basically we can see that there is only 1 element that is in M AND K but not in P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah, I see the numbers are not treated as numbers so to speak, but members of the set.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

Does it want MuK or MnK?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, I think it's the cardinality of the set.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The question is show those with just M, just K or just M & K.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or I suppose you can interpret it as the elements.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

M union K is the set of all the elements of both M and K: MuK, MorK M intersect K is the set of only the common elements: MnK, MandK

OpenStudy (amistre64):

MuK - P = {8,1,3} MnK - P = {1}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Elements - yes bc MUK is {8,1,3,2,4} P = {1,2,4} MUK - P would be {8, 1,3,2,4} - {1,2,4} (where the 1s are different elements) leaving {8,1,3}.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ack. Sorry union is or. not and

OpenStudy (amistre64):

exactly :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need to get more sleep.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

and more fiber :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if by fiber you mean coffee I agree.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you your answer clarified this in a more important way than this single question. We have to relook at the set notation chapter.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yw and good luck :)
