Statistics uses a lot of probability. So you can say that statistics is a way of applied probability.

I've always understood probability and statistics to be closely related but quite distinct. Statistics looks backwards by drawing conclusions from data collected. Probability looks foward by telling you - or predicting - that there is a 50% chance of tossing heads, for example. hth

hmm so you can use statistics to infer from data previously collected, and then while you can predict that there is a 50% you choose for example a yellow sock from your drawer in the morning
