Can anyone explain hypertonic and hypotonic solutions?

A living cell is about 75% water and cells are always immersed in an aqueous solution. Solutions vary, depending on the ratio of solutes and water. The solution with a lower concentration of solutes can be said to be hypotonic(hypo means less) The solution with a higher concentration of solutes is said to be hypertonic(hyper- more) Solutions of equal concentrations of solutes are said to be Isotonic(iso-the same) Hope this helped ^_^

hyper is always high as in hyperactive, hypertensive (high blood pressure), hyperthermia (high temperature) hypo is always low: hypothermia and oddly enough hypothesis well it was a good answer....

It is the classification of a solution based on the quantity of solute in it. Hypertonic means large quantity of solute in the solvent. Hypo, the quantity of solute is comparably less. This classification is relative ie; a comparison between 2 solutions........a hypertonic solution can be made hypotonic by adding solvent to it and again by adding solute it become hypertonic.
