i looked at the exponents to see what number it had, and determined that the number defines the degree of the term...
the terms are : \[-6x^3\] \[6x^2\] \[3x\] \[5\]
6x^2 has a 2 as an exponent, so its a degre of 2
the degrees are the exponents, and the biggest one is 3
its kinda like asking how tall you are, and then asking how you know your that tall. the tape measure says so :)

while we are at it there is more terminology. the LEADING COEFFICIENT is the coefficient of the term of highest degree so in this case it is -6
