An enzyme is a molecule(particle) which accelerates (ie:change) the rate of reaction between two or more other type of moecules without making any physical or chemical change to the expected reaction.eg:Enolase in glycolysis, HMG CoA reductase in cholestrol synthesis.

There are several properties of enzymes that make them stand out apart from mere catalysts like some metals like Zn. Most important of them is the specificity for the reaction or more correctly their substrate. While we all know that our cells are specialised to performs specific functions, it is a fact that this property of cells is largely determined by presence or absence of a particular enzyme in the cell. For example, HMG CoA reductase especially concentrates in the liver cells which accords them their unique function of cholesterol synthesis.
