What is a steroid?
Steroids include estrogen, cortisol, progesterone, and testosterone. Estrogen and progesterone are made primarily in the ovary and in the placenta during pregnancy, and testosterone in the testes. Testosterone is also converted into estrogen to regulate the supply of each, in the bodies of both females and males.
Steroids are substances synthesized from a Cholesterol skeleton. They can be natural or synthetic. Natural ones are synthesized in the body while artificial ones are taken orally/parenterally to substitute/treat deficiency diseases. Natural ones are synthesized from Adrenal glands /gonads. Eg: Adrenal-glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, DHEA, androstenedione, Gonads-Testosterone, oestrogen, progestrone etc. Artificial ones are hydrocortisone, prednisolone, dexamethasone, betamethasone, Fludrocortisone, Mometasone, Nandralone etc
