There is an old English castle surrounded by a circular wall. The wall has a north gate and a south gate. A small yellow house lays 3 miles north of the north gate. Another house, a blue one, lies 9 miles east of the south gate. What is the radius of the circle in miles formed by the wall of the castle? i) 1.9 ii) 6.2 iii) 2.5 iv) 4.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

insufficient information

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know anything about the relation between the yellow and blue houses?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, this was only the information given. I was trying to find out using trignometric ratios, but the angle measurements are uncertain.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if this is the only information given, then you cannot find the answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because whatever the size of the circle, a blue house can always lie 3 miles north of it and a yellow house can always lie 9 miles east of it. it doesn't depend on the size of the circle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually, this was a question in a quiz contest. If I answer correctly, I could get 50 points.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay suppose the radius is 1.9 miles. can a yellow house lie 9 miles east of the south gate? YES can a blue house lie 3 miles north? YES. okay suppose the radius is 6.2 miles. can a yellow house lie 9 miles east of the south gate? YES can a blue house lie 3 miles north? YES. okay suppose the radius is 2.5 miles. can a yellow house lie 9 miles east of the south gate? YES can a blue house lie 3 miles north? YES. okay suppose the radius is 4.5 miles. can a yellow house lie 9 miles east of the south gate? YES can a blue house lie 3 miles north? YES.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you knew the distance between the yellow and blue houses or the angle between them or something, then you can find out the answer. As it is, this problem has no solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. Thanks a lot!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think you will get your 50 points if you select any of the answers. all of them are right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I chose 2.5 but the answer was wrong. Anyway, I have another question. Can u answer ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

go ahead

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer is 4.5 miles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you figure that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i really cant tell u right now because i made the quiz for a tecnopedia an the quiz is still open so i told the answer thats all i can do right now but the question is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, I am not participating in the quiz. but I don't think the question is correct. Can you tell me why it is correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i really cant tell

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I meant the question is fine, but all the answers qualify as the correct one, since there is no correlation between the houses.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this supposed to be a math question or a IQ question? Because mathematically, all of the answers are correct. Rather, there is not enough information to pin point the answer,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its iq or u can say trick question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. thats what I thought.
