In order to solve a system of equations for n variables, you need n equations. In this particular case we have 2 variables. (# of boys and # of girls.) Here is the first equation: 3y = x (three times as many girls, x, as there are boys. You need three times as many boys, y, to equal the amount of girls.) And the second: y+x=24 The total number of boys, y, and the total number of girls, x, makes the classroom total, 24. Simple substitution will work for the first two, the third one is given in the problem.
