Can somebody explain WHY there is not a solution to the below system? 3x = 2y -4 6x -4y = -4 my answer key to this system says, 'no solution.' I did have problems trying to find a solution..but I would like a specific explanation as to why there is no solution to this system...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it does have a solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the program you are using is wrong

I'm in an Intermediate Algebra College course...you saying there's a typo in my textbook?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The problem specifically asked me to use the substitution method to find the solution...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol you are right, wasnt thinking too hard

OpenStudy (anonymous):

rearranage first for x' x= (2y-4)/ 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sub into second 2(2y-4) -4y =-4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gives -8 = -4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

false statement, so no solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait...what about the /3? Don't you somehow substitute that in with the 2y-4, in the second equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2(3x-2y+4)-(6x-4y+4) hence both x and y terms cancels..so no solution

Thanks shine. :)
