Definition for Proportional?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in proportion to

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If y is proportional to x then y=kx+l where k and l are constants.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bendt:u gav the definition for linearly proportional and not proportional...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've always been taught that proportional is linearly proportional. If you want to talk about other proportionalities you say e.g 'is proportional to the square'.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wen u say a number y is proportional to other x by a factor k, u mean to say that , y varies corresponding to variation in x^k. but since i guess ur now only in basics...wat bendt said holds for you :)

An equation stating that two ratio’s are equivalent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=kx "y is proportional to x"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Direct proportion means that if x increaes then y increases 'proportionally' for example y = 3x means that the value of y will always be 3 times the value of x when x = 1 y will be 3, when x=2 y will be 6 etc Inverse proportion is if x increases then y decreases for exampole y = 3 / x. The constant is not always 3 of course that is why we use a letter like k meaning 'some constant : y = kx

@elecengineer That's 'y is directly proportional to x' to be more specific.
