Evaluate the limit as x goes to 4 from the left side: (x-4)/absolute(x-4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would this mean I use -4 as the x because we are coming for the left hand side?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It will be -1 as the limit is 1 if x-4>0 and -1 if it is less

OpenStudy (anonymous):

see wen x goes to 4 from the left hand side it is close to 4 but less than it...(as it goes from3->3.5->3.99999999) so |x-4|=4-x(by property and hence u get the value as -1.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

\[\lim_{x ->0}\frac{x-4}{|x-4|}\] the limit of a ration is the ration of limits ...... right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

lim x-> 4 ......

OpenStudy (amistre64):

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=lim {x+to+4}%28x-4%29%2F|x-4|

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the one sided limits dont agree

OpenStudy (amistre64):

lim from the left is -1 lim from the right is 1

OpenStudy (amistre64):

\[x=3; f(x)=\frac{-1}{1}\] \[x=5; f(x)=\frac{1}{1}\] and so it goes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks all, had to restart my comp!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it;s the limit as x goes to 4 from the left
