In what way does an instinctive behavior pattern differ from a reflex?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An instinct requires the participation of all components of the body. A reflex, as can be seen by the reflex arc (sensory nerve-afferent nerve-brain-efferent nerve-motor nerve), is only reflected in one particular area of the body. An instinct is much more complex, in other words.

Instincts also require nerve impulses to be sent to the brain for processing, then the response is sent to the motor nerves for action. A reflex is also called a "spinal reflex" because once the signal hits the spinal cord neurons, the motor response is immediately shot back without needing to go to the brain for processing. This allows for a quick, involuntary response (most time for protection, such as moving a hand back from a hot stove burner)

Instinctive behavior pattern is modulated by higher centers ( brain ) while Reflex arc does not involve brain. Instinctive patterns are the product of a thought process while reflex is a spinal mediated protective mechanism.........
