determine the limits of a function f(x) at 2.86 I need to get lim x->2.86+ f(x) I got the lim x->2.86- f(x)= -23, and f(2.86) = -23. see attached screenshot for more details. Thanks!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i cant find a function to evaluate

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there isn't one, that's why this problem is killing me =/ I plug in values for x and then I'm given an f(x). f(2.86) = -22.996799999999418, f(2.85) = -22.822499999999422, f(2.861) = -19.427009900000435. I'm just not sure what I'm looking for.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

are the left and right side limits matching?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

or rather, are they merging onto a common number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, and the problem states "then this function is almost continuous and could be made continuous by redefining one value of the function namely 2.86"

OpenStudy (amistre64):

most likely its a piecewise function that has a jump at f(2.86)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

o rnot...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then what would my limit be? I've tried dozens of numbers, and statistically I should have arrived at the answer completely by chance. My limit can't be undefined or infinity either.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

plug in for x value like this: x = 2.859 x = 2.860 x = 2.861 and give me the readings

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-22.979342999999417 -22.996799999999418 -19.427009900000435 respectively. Also, anything beyond 5 or -5 becomes undefined, but I think that's pretty far off anyway.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

x = 2.8599 x = 2.8600 x = 2.8601

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on, I just got the answer. It appears that I wasn't rounding correctly. What an annoying problem. but thanks, I couldn't have done it without you :]

☺ youre welcome
