i use a single modem to connect two computers to internet... but i cant connect to the internet simultaneously in the two computers.... is there a way to connect so or i have to buy new modem for this...???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 modem = 1 computer. To share the connection, use one modem + one router.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is a router???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have two options: 1- Buy a router (take a look at D-link, linksys or another factory), this equipment should be connected to your modem, and your two computers should be connected to the router, in simple way, it will split your internet connection between up to 254 computers. 2 - Use one computer as a server, so you should connect your modem on this computer, and use another network card to connect this server to the other computer, It i not easy to be setted up, and you'll have to mantein the server on for the second pc can access the internet.

router is a device which helps you to connect multiple systems to a single internet line. it helps the various machines to "split" the available bandwidth and send/receive data continuously. It is better to use a router in your case. they are not very expensive....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sort of yes......

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A router is a more sophisticated network device than either a switch or a hub. Like hubs and switches, network routers are typically small, box-like pieces of equipment that multiple computers can connect to. Each features a number of "ports" the front or back that provide the connection points for these computers, a connection for electric power, and a number of LED lights to display device status. While routers, hubs and switches all share similiar physical appearance, routers differ substantially in their inner workings.

Routers for home networks (often called broadband routers) also can join multiple networks. These routers are designed specifically to join the home (LAN) to the Internet (WAN) for the purpose of Internet connection sharing. In contrast, neither hubs nor switches are capable of joining multiple networks or sharing an Internet connection. A home network with only hubs and switches must designate one computer as the gateway to the Internet, and that device must possess two network adapters for sharing, one for the home LAN and one for the Internet WAN. With a router, all home computers connect to the router equally, and it performs the equivalent gateway functions.

Hope this clears it for you......

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which means that the routers can form interconnection between computers besides providing internet connection.....??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, router can allow you to share the connection and communicate two or more computers in your network.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if your router works with wireless you have to configure the security of your network.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you are running Windows, you can use Internet Connection Sharing which will allow one of your computers to emulate a router. It's slower, but it will work. Like someone already said, it's far better just to go buy a router.
