When I run backtrack (linux(ish)) 4 r2 on my amd, my computer shuts down after about 10 minutes and is extremely hot ... is there any amd workaround for linux other than a new computer?
You can use other Linux like the Knoppix, Debian or Xubuntu with Xfce or Lxde enviroment. I believe that your problem is the refrigeration system of the processor.
http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forums/beginners-forum/34067-backtrack4-overheats-my-computer.html any way AMD is famous for overheating........add a good cooling system to your system. Disable overclocking or something like that . configure and check fan speed and processor shut-down temperature in BIOS. Have used another DISTROS..........Ubuntu,Mandriva,Fedora,Debian... will work well I think.........
Hakkuna is right!
More ideas needed please contribute...........

Have you checked if the processors cooler is spinning? The Hdd also can heat...
once a time, i had a similar problem with slackware 12.0, my laptop has a intel processor and the fan was not working, and the temperature was getting higher until the pc turn off ... i had to turn on some modules like fan and acpi ... try to discover if those modules are loaded
