frank and emma have a 550 acre farm used for growing corn and soybeans. the cost of cultivating corn and soybeans is $28 for corn and $46 for soybeans. Frank and emma have $19750 available for cultivating these crops. If they wish to use all the allotted land and their entire budget for cultivating these two crops, how many acres of each crop should they plant? show how you arrived at your answer.

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

c = Acres of Corn s = Acres of Soybeans $28 per acre of corn in algebra is just 28c $46 per acre of soybeans in algebra is just 46s You want to spend a total of 19,750.... so that means: 28c + 46s = 19,750 But you are limited to only 550 acres!! You can't let c = 2,000 for example... cuz that's too many acres! :( So you need another equation: c + s = 550 Hope this helps. :)

no i dont understand, if im solving to see how many acres of each crop to use how does c + s apply to that?

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

You have two linear equations. Graph them, find their intersection. The coordinate of the intersection will give you the values of c and s. :)

this isnt making since because once you put the first equation into mx+b form how do you you figure out the other variable
