What is the distance between D and A using a number line? D = 1, A = -5 a) -6 b) 4 c) 6 d) -4 ??

OpenStudy (radar):

1-(-5)=6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats the distance . . . . ?

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Correct. If you look at a number line: | --- -5 --- -4 --- -3 --- -2 --- -1 --- 0 --- 1 --- 2 | The question is, how many segments do you have to cross to get from 1 to -5. Now, you'll have to check your book as to what they consider `distance'. Arguably here it is -6 rather than 6, because you have to go BACK 6 to get from 1 to -5.

Im doing summer classes . so i dont have a book resource . so my answer is neggative 6 . . ?

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

That seems like the safest path.

OpenStudy (radar):

The sign is tricky. The problem doesn't say like the distance from A to D or D to A it just says between A and D. Some scholars consider distance as positive and a directed distance as having sign to indicate direction. It is unfortunate that they have both a 6 and a -6 as a choice. I personally don't know what the problem desires for an answer.

im guessing they are asking for the distance formula to be used . . i just cant remember how to do so . and this is an online course and i have to to pass this test inorder to pass my course.
