amy paid $79.23 for a pair of funning shoes during a 35% off sale what was the original price I came up with $226.37 is this answer correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not exactly. I like to work the problems in reverse: if you bought them during a 35% off sale, then you paid only 65% of the original price. (100%-35%=65%) If that's the case, then 65% of the original price is $79.23, so you need to solve this equation:\[.65x=$79.23\]Divide both sides by .65 and you should have your answer.

so is the answer 153.85

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No... \[79.23\div.65\]Check your math again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the org. price is not 79.23 thats how much she paid with the discount

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so that would make the org. price 121.89

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know. Like I said, if she got 35% off the original, it really means she only paid 65% of the original price. That means .65x = 79.23. Yes..you got it now. :-) Put another way:\[x-.35x = 79.23\]which simplifies to what I said...
