Translate to an equation: p $5 bags of popcorn and s $4 sodas total $60

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you have any guess?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

LOL, not a clue. Sadly, my school text books are severely lacking in examples. =/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, well let me ask you this. How much would it cost to buy 3 bags of popcorn if they are 5 dollars each?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

$15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And how much will it cost to buy 'p' bags? If they are 5 dollars each?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What did you do to the 3 before to find the cost? Do that to the p here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahhhh, okay. That makes sense now. :) Just muliply.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right. So the cost for the popcorn is ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I guess I am confused... the price for the popcorn is $5 a bag, but I don't know how many bags. Six bags would be $30, leaving another $30 for the sodas. This seems simple, but it's not clicking lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You do know how many bags. They tell you they bought p bags. Where p is some number. So treat p just like any other number and do what you did to the 3 to the p.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the price for just the popcorn was 5(p)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So now, if they bought s sodas (where s is some number). And each soda is 4 dollars, how much does it cost for all the sodas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

p $5 bags of popcorn and s $4 sodas total $60 5p + 4s = 60
