173441=prime*another prime see if you can find these primes
my calculator can...does that count?
lol
i was thinking of an algorithm
I love my ti-nspire cas :)
how much is that
an algorithm that checks the number against all the primes less than \[\sqrt{173441}\]?
have you ever heard of fermat's factorization method?
about 150$-160$ us
there are other factorization methods as well
not by name...
the RSA is a public key encryption based on the difficulty of factoring really really huge freaking numbers and this is not that big compare to the ones they use lol
looking at wiki...no I haven't
sure
i like this stuff but it has been awhile since i have looked at it
I have never taken and course work in number theory or encryption.
i never taken any course in encryption but i think number theory is awesome we didn't go into factorization methods but it was fun i liked it you should take if you have the chance
I'm done taking classes ;)
lol what is your favorite kind of math?
Mathematical Statistics/Probability theory
you?
number theory eventhough i'm not an expert at it
you have a degree in mathematics?
yes
i'm going back for my phd in applied science this fall
cool
i;m going to do a research in cryptography (theory of) no apply crap because i'm not a computer science person lol
Make sure you have a faculty member in mind that you could work with on your disertation
goal is to construct an algorithm you know like the RSA or something like that something to
i didn't finish that sentence lol i already got one in mind
hes already agreed to it :)
having the right adviser is more important than the school itself imo
cool
how high are you in the ranks of math?
I have a Ph.D. in Mathematical Statistics and I'm a professor
cool! you can't get enough of teaching people so you come here?
I don't do much in the summer. When the fall semester comes around you prob won't see me much.
i'm not sure about this applied science program they are going to make me take an entrance exam i'm sure i don't have all the knowledge they would like me to have
go they require the GRE
do
yes i have done that and i did well enough for their school which is all i wanted
the math part was the easiest but there were some unexpecting problems (which were fun since they were unexpected) for example: solve for a+b a^2+2ab+b^2+4a+4b+4=0
ah
lol (a+b)^2+4(a+b)+4=0 (a+b+2)^2=0 lol
make it into a quadratic in a+b
yes
i liked that one i cant believe it was on the gre i know alot of people(non-math) would not get that one
prob not
i teach at a small college in arkansas college has about 700 people
you want to teach after you finish the Ph.D.?
not really
what do you teach?
college algebra, trig, cal 1, cal 2, (teach some remedial math)
cool
i dont like teaching college algebra or anything less than college algebra
i like calculus alot!
I've never taught that class. Didn't do it as a grad student and we don't offer college alg at my institution
calculus is very nice
I have calc III this fall
wow your institution must be for high act scorers
besides the humanities math class, the lowers we offer is precalc
lowest
humanities math class?
math for non math majors...used to fill their math requirement
ah
it has stuff like logic/graph theory/ probability / ect...all at a low level so that they can understand
graph theory is fun
I teach at a liberal arts college
what state?
for me it's ok..not my favorite though
Pennsylvania
